The simple classification of printed circuit boards

2020-06-12

PCB can be divided into single panel, double panel and multilayer board according to the number of layers; according to the material, it can be divided into flexible PCB board (flexible board), rigid PCB board and rigid-flexible PCB board (rigid-flexible board). The printed circuit board is one of the important electronic components and the carrier of electronic components. The following article will briefly introduce these types of PCBs for you.

1. Classified according to the number of PCB circuit layers: divided into single panel, double panel and multilayer board. Common multi-layer boards are generally 3-6 layer boards, and complex multi-layer boards can reach more than ten layers.

(1) Single layer PCB

On the most basic printed circuit board, parts are concentrated on one side, and wires are concentrated on the other side. Because the wires only appear on one side, this kind of printed circuit board is called a single panel. Because the single panel has many strict restrictions on the line (because there is only one side, the wiring between can not cross and must be around a separate path), so early circuits used this type of circuit board.

(2) Double layer PCB

This circuit board has wiring on both sides. In order for the wires on both sides to be connected, there must be an appropriate circuit connection between the two sides. This connection between circuits is called a via. The pilot hole is a small hole filled or coated with metal on the printed circuit board, which can be connected to the wires on both sides. Because the area of the double-sided board is doubled than that of the single-sided board, and the wiring can be staggered (can be wound to the other side), the double-sided board can be used on more complicated circuits than the single-sided PCB board.

(3) Multi-layer PCB

In order to increase the area that can be wired, the multilayer board uses more single or double-sided wiring boards. The multi-layer board uses several double-sided boards, and puts an insulating layer between each board and sticks it firmly. The number of layers of the circuit board represents several independent wiring layers, usually the number of layers is even, and includes the outermost two layers.

2. According to the type of substrate of PCB: flexible circuit board, rigid circuit board and rigid-flex combination board.

(1) Flexible PCB

The flexible board is a printed circuit board made of a flexible base material. Its advantage is that it can be bent, which facilitates the assembly of electrical components. FPC has been widely used in aerospace, military, mobile communications, laptop computers, computer peripherals, PDAs, digital cameras and other fields or products.

(2) Rigid PCB

It is made of paper base (usually used for single-sided) or glass cloth base (usually used for double-sided and multi-layer), prepreg phenolic or epoxy resin, and copper foil on one or both sides of the surface layer is laminated and cured. This kind of PCB copper-clad sheet is called rigid board. After making the PCB, we call it the PCB rigid board is a printed circuit board made of a rigid substrate that is not easy to bend and has a certain toughness. Its advantage is that it can provide certain support for the electronic components attached to it.

(3) Rigid-flexible PCB board

Rigid-flex board refers to a printed circuit board containing one or more rigid areas and flexible areas, consisting of rigid boards and flexible boards laminated together. The advantage of the rigid-flex board is that it can not only provide the support of the rigid printed board, but also have the bending characteristics of the flexible board, which can meet the needs of three-dimensional assembly.
