The selection of PCB raw material - CCL(copper clad laminate)

2019-05-14

CCL is the most important material in PCB production, accounting for about 45% of the entire PCB. The most common substrates are FR-4 - Woven glass, epoxy. There are many types of copper clad laminates. The most common ones are classified according to Tg value (heat resistance): general Tg sheets are ≥130°C, medium Tg≥150°C, and high Tg≥170°C. As the value of Tg increases, the price increases accordingly.

With the rapid development of the electronics industry, especially the electronic products represented by computers, the development of high functionality and high multi-layer requires the higher heat resistance of PCB substrate materials as an important guarantee. The emergence and development of high-density mounting technology represented by SMT and CMT makes PCBs more and more inseparable from the high heat resistance of substrates in terms of small hole size, fine wiring and thinning. The Tg of the substrate is improved, and the characteristics such as heat resistance, moisture resistance, chemical resistance, and stability of the printed board are improved and improved. The higher the Tg value, the better the temperature resistance of the sheet, especially in the lead-free process, where high Tg is applied.

When ordering from a PCB factory, we need to know the CCL that are often used in the factory, or we can specify the brand of CCL to be purchased by the PCB factory. At present, the world's largest manufacturer of copper-clad laminates is Guangdong Shengyi Technology, and the corresponding price is also pretty high. Other mainstream manufacturers are NanYa, ITEQ, KingBoard etc.
